| I actually didn't buy this for myself but for my relative who has opened his eyes to Namco's great "Tales" video game series. I only played a few titles of this series but I can tell you that I love it. I own Tales of Legendia and Tales of the Abyss on PS2 while my brother owns Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube. I believe they are all great buys and the only reason We don't have more of the kinds of games because its a bit harder and more expensive to track down a new and even used copy of the past games. If only money grew on trees....The only reason why I didn't personally purchase this fairly priced game ($34.99 when I bought it) is because I don't own am X-box 360. So far I've heard my relative's enjoying it very much and he plays it constantly. I am a bit familiar with this series so I know it would take a lot of time to complete the game 100% (My brother's symphonia taking more than 100 hours and counting) and my relatives a bit more on the hardcore side when it comes to perfection. In short he loves it, the games great, and I wish Namco will keep making these games in the future and bring over the other great titles that didn't make it here in the past. |
Horrific AI and awful combat spoil this decent RPG

The combat was just too imbalanced. Most battles are a breeze; you easily win every battle by doing simple combos and timing your defense well. However, when it comes to bosses the game becomes unnecessarily difficult and frustrating. Boss fights are overly hard for absolutely no reason. The bosses are so powerful that you can't approach them head on like 99% OF THE REST OF THE GAME, forcing you to use the frustrating other parts of the combat system such as "free run." Free run allows you to walk anywhere on the battle field, not just forward and backward. On Xbox360 you have to hold Left Trigger to use Free Run. This allows you to dodge attacks but it is so annoying to have to press another button just to move freely. And you MUST use free run on bosses because they are too overpowered so you can't use defense. This forces you to play a certain way, and that's no fun.
The AI will cause you to lose boss battles numerous times. I was fighting one of the first bosses in the game where there are plants that are on the battlefield that stun an area around them when you attack them. They don't actually attack or are considered enemies (because you don't have to defeat them to win). However, the RETARDED AI spent the entire battle ATTACKING THEM, STUNNING HIMSELF and then we died. Not to mention all AI characters will just stand in the line of fire until they die, including magic casters. This makes some boss battles almost impossible for me to beat.
I'm very upset because the story seemed kind of fun, although a little shallow. The characters felt natural and the dialogue was good. I want to continue the story, but I can't stand the gameplay... Unfortunately I think I'll have to quit without finishing.
EDIT: I forgot to mention how this game is an obvious clone of Eternal Sonata. In fact, the overworld music in this game is the EXACT same music from Eternal Sonata in the area where you collect the papers for the goats. Rip off? I think so. |
In a drowning world of JRPGs...
|

Being that JRPGs is my favorite genre of games, and I've played and own many of them, I've never been completely into the 'Tales' series. Sure I've played one in the past (specifically speaking 'Symphonia'), but I never had a win or lose opinion about the series. Well, 'Vesperia' completely converted me and now I must play each title as they come along.
I thought about buying the game many times, and passed on it, and it wasn't until my utter disappointment with 'Final Fantasy XIII' that I finally decided to pick of Vesperia. See, I needed something to take out the bitter taste of my gaming experience that FF13 gave me - as that was the game that was supposed to take me above and beyond the JRPG experience. Visually it did, but that's simply all it did. Still, in a world of FPS shooters, it's hard enough finding some solid JRPGs out there for the next-gen consoles. And with that limitation I happily, gladly, and finally picked up 'Vesperia' only to find that it had EVERYTHING I loved most about JRPGs. It reiterated most of what I loved since 'Tecmo Secret of the Stars': Distinct characters; multiple levels of dark storytelling despite the light appeal; massive worlds with the freedom to explore them; A WORLD MAP (all JRPGs MUST have an accessible world map, sorry); a welcoming battle system that allows you to determine how your partners will or will not act with the equipment you present them with; levels and levels of character progression, skills, weapons, etc.; great music and voice acting; and beautiful visuals. One other key feature: MULTIPLE SIDE QUESTS to better your cast and experience.
I'm not sure what I love most about JRPGs. There are so many elements that make the experience wonderful, but I think the ultimate appeal is spending time with the game and characters. It's hard to forget about characters who you literally watch make choices WITH you alongside them as a participatant. 'Tales of Vesperia' gave the player this experience as certain events, locations, and conversations with NPCs lead to different scenarios of the cast's development. Even when the characters were simply standing around having a conversation I found myself in love with them all because I was present in the occurrence and not an outsider to it.
The only - and I mean only - thing I found obnoxious about the game was attempting to acquire secret mission 17 (as those who haven't played will see). Otherwise, I recommend this for anyone who wants an involved, solid JRPG.
Another added bonus is this game actually has a Game + feature once it's completed so that most of what you earn in your first playthrough CAN be carried over via Grade points. And there are tons of DLC materials if you are an Xbox Live subscriber. Don't be afraid to take advantage of this material because the game looks cute, but she ain't easy. |

I got this game as a gift and the person I gave it to seemed to really enjoy it, based on the feedback I was given after he played it. Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase. I got it for a great 'deal of the day' sale price on Amazon and as usual, delivery was prompt and the item came in good condition.

| Just wanted to say a few words about this game not gonna get into all the details but this is the best rpg I have ever played and I have been playing rpgs since the late 1980's and this by far is the best so if you have a chance to get this pick it up as it is gettting harder and harder to find now since they stopped making them. This game beats out all the final fantasy games in my opinion and the only game I think even comes close would be something like Secret Of Mana(SNES)or maybe Legend Of Dragoon (PS1) |
